N80 support 802.11g(ieee std) According to which you can get data rates of up to 54mbs.Secondly its also compatible with 802.11b radio which support data rates of 11mbps.
Secondly since wifi is open environment so for security purpose N80 support both WEP and WPA ( both are security standard both use different encryption to secure your data)WPA is most advance security standard till date in wifi. And its supported by your phone so cheer up!!
How Wifi work
-----------------
AP(Access point ) or Wireless router are configured with key called SSID(system set identifier) which get broadcasted by AP and when we look for available wireless network then seen by our device.
AP(SSID)>>>>>>>>>>>client(SSID)
Which actually allow both device to get connected. If we have any security configued then you need to enter password or secret key as to authenticate as valid user to AP or wireless router.
Now N80 has both option ie you can configure it with setting that you have on AP or you can dynamically enter them while connecting realtime.
Now once we get connected with wifi to run internet or open any web page we need IP address on both devices .ie AP as well as cell phone.Very similar as we have ip address configured on our computer.
N80 has option that you can statically ie manually configure IP address. The static ip address remain configured even you get dis assocaiate and move to different AP or in other word the different network.
The other way is once you get assocaited with AP/wireless router it push ip address on it dynamically. In that situation you need to configure AP / wireless router as DHCP SERVER.
NOTE : we have specific setting in specific environment. But suppose you some where with open network (ie no security ) then you just need to look for available network and select it similar as we do in bluetoth.
goto Settings-> Access Points->Options->New Access Points->Use Default Settings
Connection Name: Home or BSNL (or anything u want)
Data Bearer: Wireless Lan
WLan Netw. Name: Its better to search for your access point (unless its a hidden SSID)
PS. this field is case sensitive
Network Status: Hidden if you have a hidden SSID otherwise just choose public
Mode: Infrastructure
Security Mode: what ever is set up on the modem
After this set up the WLAN Security Settings
Now goto Options->Advanced settings->IPv4 Settings
Phone IP: give an IP similar to the one that ur laptop uses eg. if laptop IP is 192.168.1.2 then give 192.168.1.3
Subnet MasK: same as the mask on the laptop (usually 255.255.255.0)
Default Gateway: same as on laptop (usually 192.168.1.1)
DNS Address: same as that on the laptop (usually 61.1.96.69; leave secondary as 0.0.0.0)
you are all set up
now open the browser and search for the WLAN access point and browse!!
note:: if the network is in the infrastructure mode,no need to assign any static ip on his phone
If u dnt hav WLAN wizard installed in ur mobile--> download it frm here
